Review 5/7/2010

I am attempting moving across country from Sacramento to Atlanta GA. I hired a moving company (American Best Movers aka ABM Van Lines) to move my belongings and was given an estimate for the costs (via Internet). A scout or representative never came to my residence to physically review my belongings prior to the moving crew arriving. I was never provided with the Important Information Notice about you move document or the Important Information for persons Moving Household Goods booklet. I was not informed by the sales associate or the moving foreman in advance what the packing materials and labor could cost in addition to the transportation. I scheduled a date and time for them to show up. They were 7 hrs late. The foreman had me fill out my name, current and future addresses, and sign the bottom, that was it. Then asked for the payment I wrote a $2,200 check to cover 1/2 of the costs I was informed about. Then they of course went about their business of packing my things. I had all my small personal items already packed. All they needed to pack was my furniture and large items.
Seven hours later and getting almost all of my belongings packed and on the truck (not everything fit and they have to return to pick up the rest) and them literally walking out the door the foreman informs me that the packing costs in addition to the transportation costs (which was estimated at $4,300). The bill he gave me was for $3,580.20. I almost passed out. I expected to maybe pay an extra $300 or $400. Never dreamed it would be what was presented. I work at Home Depot and could have purchased all packing material for a couple hundred dollars. They never fully informed me as to what these additional costs could mount up to. I called the office the next day and was informed they couldn't pick up the remainder of my things until mon or tue or give me any further details of the costs because they hadn't sent in the contract. Now I am being told there is going to be charged an additional charge to pick up the remainder of my goods. I am scheduled to leave the state of California on the 20th of May and scared to death I will not be able to either get my goods delivered or even back into my possession. I have very limited amount of money to work with and can't afford the additional charges they say I owe. I was prepared to pay an additional $1,000 above the estimate. I am a single woman in my mid fifties and deathly afraid I am going to loose all of my worldly possessions. They are currently holding my possessions hostage until I pay what they say I owe. I have very limited financial means and these people are taking total advantage of my situation.
